The Gods must really be paying attention these days, for the likes of Simian Mobile Disco to team up with the Gossip’s Beth Ditto is the epitome of divine intervention itself. “Cruel Intentions” is super reminiscent of late 80s acid house, and Beth’s voice merges perfectly with the minimal tech. You can find this track on SMD’s upcoming “Temporary Pleasure” EP. |

Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” is a truly magical song. Sparse and bittersweet, the simplicity of the song belies the intensity of emotion it conveys. This video is a bit unexpected and threw me off guard the first time I saw it. Directed by Patrick Daughters, the really intense facial close-ups are a bit awkward at first, but the subtle transformation of their expressions fit perfectly with the dramatic crescendo of the song. French producer extraordinaire Fred Falke also has his own re-interpretation, which transforms the ballad into a synth-drenched dance anthem. listen / download: |

Empire of the Sun, otherwise known as Nick Littlemore of Pnau and Luke Steele of the Sleepy Jacksons, have forever changed the world as we know it.
Virtually materializing out of thin air, this band have produced an album so epic and so near perfect, it threatens to shift the delicate cosmic equilibrium of our galaxy. “Standing on the Shore” is their latest release, and is particularly special to me. It’s a fairly short song, less than 4 minutes, but has this sense of distance, as if you are traveling across a great sandy tundra. The video taps into this theme exactly, with crazed, dancing Fish Girls frolicking in the desert, and Nick and Luke in their signature Disco Warrior/Sorcerer outfits casting spells and making cat eyes. Lifelike unveiled a remix a few weeks ago, and I’ve had a devil of a time in finding it. It basically retains all the core elements of the original, but makes the ecstasy last about 6 minutes longer. listen/right-click to download: Empire of the Sun – We are the People [thx punkreas.org] Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream (Wake Up!
